How to Teach Poetry Using Reading and Writing Workshop

Using poetry in a reading and writing workshop can help students to develop their understanding of literary devices and techniques, as well as their own writing skills. To teach poetry to older elementary students, you can follow these steps.

How to Begin Teaching Poetry

Introduce the concept of poetry. Explain what poetry is, its different forms, and why it is an important form of expression. Have students examine the poetry and write down the text features. What do they notice and how is poetry different from a story? This is a lesson from the first day of the reading workshop that introduces poetry. Students can record the features on the note-taking sheet.

Reading Poetry

Read poems together. Have a wide variety of poems to choose from. You can use the mentor texts that are provided in the workshop or poetry books from the library. Choose poems that are simple, engaging, and age-appropriate for the students. Ask questions and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings about the poems.

Writing Poetry

One of the best ways to get students to understand poetry is to have them copy poems from books they have read. This helps them to get a feel for poetry and create a collection of poems. When they are comfortable, they can move on to becoming authors of poetry. Have students write their own poems. Give students time to brainstorm, write and revise their own poems. Encourage them to play with language and explore different forms of poetry.

Analyze poems. Teach students how to analyze poems by looking at elements such as imagery, rhyme, meter, and figurative language. Write their noticings down on an anchor chart for reference.

Celebrating

Share and celebrate student work. Allow students to share their poems with the class and offer positive feedback. Consider creating a poetry anthology or hosting a poetry reading to celebrate the students' work. Remember to keep the activities and lessons interactive, engaging, and fun. Poetry can be a great way to foster creativity and self-expression in students. Below is a list of the lessons included in the poetry workshop.

How to Teach Informational with Reading and Writing Units

This literacy unit provides teachers with EVERYTHING they need to successfully teach an informational reading and writing workshop for an entire month of school! Lesson plans, mentor texts, suggested anchor charts, and much more are included in this unit. Reading and writing are so closely related. The two subjects are taught together on a single day. The writing lessons build off of the reading lessons. If the teacher chooses, both subjects can be taught independently.

How to Begin Using the Informational Units

The first reading lesson helps identify text features found in informational books. Teachers can use the provided mentor texts to help teach this lesson. They also can use a popular book from the suggested book list. Teachers can use a book from their own library too. There are so many options. Below is an anchor chart from the reading lesson on day 1.

The writing lesson builds off of the learning from the reading lesson. Each lesson can also be a stand-alone lesson. Students do not need to do research in this unit. They are building off of topics that they already know a lot about.

The teacher introduces a new lesson and students examine it with texts that they have read together in class. Then, students get a chance to practice these skills using a book from their own reading level. Next, graphic organizers are provided so that students can show their learning. These are the graphic organizers for reading and writing lesson 1. Finally, students fill these out on their own and add these organizers to their notebooks. This is a great way to show their learning and use them as a reference.

Below is a list of all of the lessons in this informational unit. All grade levels follow the same lessons. The mentor texts and the standards change for each grade level.

How to Teach Narratives Using Anchor Charts and Mentor Texts

Teaching students how to identify and write personal narratives is something we all do each year. Anchor charts are an effective way to help students learn about this genre. It is easy to incorporate both reading and writing during workshop time. Everything that you need to teach this literacy unit is provided for you. This includes the lessons, mentor texts, anchor charts, student recording sheets, graphic organizers, and independent practice. Let's take a look at reading workshop. Although there are 10 genres available for each grade level, we will be focusing on personal narratives. There are enough lessons to help you successfully teach this unit for an entire month.

How to Begin Teaching Personal Narratives

Personal Narrative Lesson 1

Whether you are teaching personal narrative or another genre, the format for reading and writing workshop remains the same. All of the lessons follow the format above. Start with an introduction. The next step is to model what you are teaching for the class. You can do this by using the mentor texts that are provided for you in the unit.

Then, invite the students to help you as they are thinking out loud while adding their thoughts to the anchor chart. Next, engage all learners as you have them turn and talk and find more examples to add to the anchor chart. You can have them continue using the mentor text. Finally, the students will be transitioned into independent time. Students will apply the skills that they have just learned by using their own books during independent reading time.

Using Anchor Charts

Anchor charts are a great way to model and display the information you are teaching. Start by writing the mini-lesson objective at the top. You can prepare this step and the categories in advance.

Choose a mentor text. This can either be from one of your own books, or from a mentor text that is provided for you. Read the story to the students. Model for the information from the text that matches the mini-lesson. Record this information on the anchor chart. Next, have volunteers point out other information from the story and record their responses on the anchor chart. Finally, have students work together by using a turn and talk. Using collaboration helps to build confidence with students. Record additional information on the anchor chart.

After students have mastered the mini-lesson, send them off to work on their own. Graphic organizers are provided for students to record the examples that they find from their own personal book boxes. The writing workshop lessons build upon the same mini-lesson taught during reading so that students can apply their learning in their writing.

How is the reading and writing workshop set up?

In each lesson, you will have the same format. Included each day: a mini-lesson statement, suggested things to do before you begin the lesson, an introduction, and a sample anchor chart. Original mentor texts are included with each unit. The lesson follows with a model, inviting students to help, engaging all learners, transitioning to independent time, and the share. This format allows for the I do, we do, you do model. Once students are in the independent time, the teacher can pull students for small group time.

Students need to know what the reading and writing workshop is and how to set up their notebooks for each. 10 Quick Thoughts About Teaching Writing

Today I'm sharing 10 little knowledge nuggets all related to teaching writing. My challenge to you is to latch on to one or two of these “Ah-Ha” moments for teaching writing. Spend the day thinking about a few ideas that really resonate with you as a teacher of writing. Decide how you can expand these thoughts and implement them into your class to help your young writers today. Here we go!

1. This Idea comes from Carl Anderson's work in the book called “Accessing Writers”. He says “Let's stop calling the time before a rough draft pre-writing. Our students are actually writing here! Instead, let's call it rehearsing.” I love this idea of shifting from a pre-writing mindset to a rehearing mindset. The students really are writing during the rough draft stage so why call it pre-writing? Rehearsing is a much better fit. 

2. What do we as teachers understand about writing, and can we bring to the table to teach our students about writing? Think about that today. What do you really understand about writing and what do you actually teach your students about writing? 

3. What does an effective process look like? For you personally what does your process look like? Take some time to think about this so that you can transition this into teaching your young writers about the process of writing.   

4. Let’s take some time to watch our students write and access what they do. Try taking some time today to just step back and watch. Be an observer. Are they re-reading their work? Do they spend time rehearsing or jump straight into a rough draft? How is there writing stamina?  Are they writing for more than five minutes or is it five minutes and then they're done? These are some great example questions we can find the answers to by observing our students. 

5. The most important thing we can teach our young learners is to see themselves as writers. We want them to see themselves as real writers who have something important to say that matters to this world and no-one else can say it the way they can. Start addressing your students as writers. 

6. As teachers, we need to accept that writing can get messy. We have to be okay with lots of marks, fixes, corrections, and do-overs. We can't just focus on conventions. 

7. Just like students learn math differently, they all have their own approach to the writing process. We need to teach different ways writers write and give students the option to try out what works for them as a writer. 

8. To have an effective writing process kids need flexibility. They need to be able to try out new approaches to their writing. 

9. Our young writers must have an audience and a sense of purpose so that they can see their writing as not just another assignment, but rather as something of great value for themselves and for their future audience. 

10. Teachers need to be writers in order to teach writers. We cant lead students where we ourselves haven’t gone. So make sure you spend time writing on your own as well! Maybe even have some fun writing with your students.

How to Build Writing Stamina

So often our young writers struggle with being able to focus for more than a few minutes. This is especially true at the beginning of the school year, or after a long break away from school. Today I'll share one of my favorite writing mini-lessons with you on how to help students build their writing stamina. 

I begin the lesson by writing the mini-lesson statement on an anchor chart piece of paper before I meet with the class. The mini-lesson statement I use goes like this:

I also write a title for a list the students will help me complete. The title of that chart is “Ways We can Build Our Writing Stamina”. So on the top of my anchor chart, it says “Writers work to build their writing stamina so that they can spend more time doing their best writing”, and then I have a title that says “Ways We can Build Our Writing Stamina”.

To start the lesson out I'll get everybody out, read over the statement, and then I'll talk about how writers need to work on building their stamina so that they can write for longer periods of time. Then I'll mention to them that we're going to practice that. I'll give the kids a few examples of ways we can build stamina. I might say things like “Practice writing for a little bit every day!” or “Write down all of our ideas and thinking and not just the ones we think are the most important. Then I'll invite the kids to help me add to the list that our class comes up with. After a few kids share from raising their hands and inviting them to learn, I will put those ideas on the list. Then I'll have everybody get actively involved by having them turn and talk to a partner about other ideas we can put on our list.

Here are some things your student might say, and of course, they can come up with all kinds of unique ideas. You might have on your list: “Ways to build stamina is to keep our minds focused on our writing.” So, talk about being focused when writing and not on other distractions like what's for lunch or what am I going to do tonight. One might say re-reading our writing to get more ideas, this helps build our stamina. So talk about going back over and reviewing your own writing and letting our imaginations take over and not being so worried about language and spelling, but just simply giving ourselves that freedom to write. Understanding that there is no wrong answer when we are writing and to keep writing down whatever our brains our thinking is key to remember.

By using the prompts in this lesson I get students to understand the importance of building writing stamina. We start practicing right away. I like to use writing prompts to help begin their writing on topics that interest them.

A Writing Workshop Schedule with 30 Minutes

One of the biggest questions I get asked is “How do you set up your daily writing workshop routine?” I always answer with “Stay consistent with your routine to help students anticipate the learning AND to ensure you cover everything you need in the time that you have.” Some teachers have a 60-minute writing block, some have a 45-minute block. Today lets look at what is a common routine for a 30-minute writing block. Now 30 minutes is a tight schedule for a writing or reading block so I recommend using an A/B schedule for your block. Now, this schedule can be daily, or it can be weekly. With writing, I always recommend a daily A/B schedule.

So your A/B schedule would start on day A, and on that day you start with your mini-lesson. You do your whole group writing workshop mini lesson for 10 minutes. Then, you go into your status of the class for 5 minutes. This is where you will ask the students to tell you what they are going to do in writing time that day. While they are telling you this you will write down on a note what each student is doing. If they are struggling to come up with ideas on what to do in writing, then that gives you a great idea of who to go talk to right away. The last 15 minutes in your A-day then will be time for them to write independently,  in small groups or centers. So your A-day will have the mini lesson for 10 minutes, the status of the class for 5, and then independent writing, small groups, and centers in writing for 15 minutes. 

When you come back for your B-day you’ll start the day with a share, so you’ll share what the kids did from yesterdays writing time. They’ll bring their notebooks for writing, or whatever pieces they're working on, and they’ll share with a partner what they did and share with the whole class. You can do this for 10 minutes. Then review the skill you taught the day before for about 5 minutes. So you’ll go over the lesson from your A-day for about 5 minutes. And finally, give the kids about 15 minutes for independent writing on your B-day.  You can also do some small group activity with them, guided reading, writing conferences, or some center activities. That's your B-day, and then the next day you’ll start you A-day over again. 

A-day: Mini-lesson for 10 minutes, the status of the class for 5, independent writing for 15. 

B-day: Share from the day before for 10 minutes, review the skill for 5, and then independent wiring for 15.

5 Quick Steps to Keeping Mini Lessons “Mini”

If you’ve ever struggled to keep your mini-lessons in reading and writing actually mini, trust me, you are not alone. I've lost count of how many time I've walked into class thinking I could finish the lesson in 10 – 12 minutes and next thing I know, 20 minutes had gone by and I wasn’t even close to being done. When I realized how long my mini-lessons were really taking I sought out on a mission to find a way to keep them actually mini so my students had more time to practice reading and writing independently each day. Heres 5 quick steps that I've followed for years to eliminate all kinds of unnecessary time and keep my mini-lessons super focused and intentional. 

1. Pick a focus area that you know your students have been struggling with and stick to it. You may notice they struggle with writing a summary for example, so make summarizing your focus for that day. 

2. Narrow the focus. This may be the most important step. Think about it. If your focus area is summarizing and you go straight into the lesson with this focus, you are going to be all over the place because summarizing is a giant comprehension skill. What are you going to focus on? Summarizing in a sequence? Summarizing the main idea? Adding opinions in summarizing? Knowing what should be included or left out? You can see how quickly this big topic can become overwhelming and the complete opposite of narrowed down or “mini”. So we must narrow the focus. Find just one angle that we want to focus on for that day. Not only will this keep your mini-lesson mini, it will be simple for your students to understand and immediately apply the learning into their own independent time. 

3. Take a few minutes before the lesson to make your plan for modeling your skill. Have a strategy of what you’ll say and how you’ll model the lesson. If you are using an anchor chart write your thinking ahead of time on the chart. Simply cover it up with another piece of chart paper until you're ready to share it with the class. This will save you at least 5 minutes of time and the kids don't need to watch you write your example on the chart. 

4. Plan 2-3 questions to ask the class as an invitation to learn. After you’ve finished modeling the skill, have these questions ready to ask so that you stay on track and keep the lesson moving. 

5. Plan 1 – 2 questions ahead of time to ask students as they turn and talk with a partner and try out the skill on there own where everybody is actively learning. 

By choosing a topic, narrowing the focus, and planning ahead of time, you’ll keep your mini-lesson on the topic, easy to understand, intentional, and most important of all, mini. I hope this helps some teachers who are struggling to keep those mini-lessons mini. It has been my pleasure chatting with you today.
